Dear County Commissioners, Heidi, Heather and Greg,
I’m writing to express my concern about the possible closure of the Port Townsend Community Rec Center. I know the county is facing hard choices, but this center provides essential value
to our community—and it has become a vital part of my own well-being.
For several years, I’ve attended the Zumba/dance classes there three days a week (they are offered five). These classes consistently bring 25–50 people together—teens, parents with kids,
seniors in their 80s, and people with disabilities. The instructors radiate joy, and the room fills with smiles and shared positive energy. The mental and emotional benefits are immediate
and lasting. Many of us feel these classes are a form of “good medicine,” helping us stay grounded, healthy, and connected in challenging times.
But Zumba is only one part of what makes this building indispensable. The Rec Center also offers $4 senior lunches, veterans’ support, Library book sales, arts and crafts markets, Photography
Club meetings, computer help, youth sports, Skate Night, Play School for kids, and a safe after-school space for teens. Programs like the Revisioning Dementia workshop also depend on
this facility.
This center is one of the few places in our county where people of all ages and abilities gather, feel welcomed, and benefit from affordable community services. Closing it would create
a significant loss for seniors, families, children, and the many residents who rely on this space.
Please do not vote to shut down the Community Rec Center. We need this resource now more than ever.
Thank you for your dedication to our community.
Sincerely,
Gloria Lamson
