To whom it may concern,
My name is Kara O’Connell and I have lived and served in Port Townsend since 2014. I am writing you to implore you to save the Rec Center. Please.
I grew up in Forks, Washington and went to nursing school in Spokane. When we found out we were pregnant with our first child we decided to move back to our beloved peninsula and found
our dream in Port Townsend. I serve as an 11 year Emergency Room charge nurse at Jefferson Healthcare. I’m invested in this community, serving my patients like they are my own family,
and may have served some of you.
My entire family of five has been involved with the Recreation Center. I join a dynamic group of people in Zumba five days a week and have since 2021. This is the community that helps
keep me here and rooted in Port Townsend. My kids dance and play on the stage alongside other Zumba mothers and fathers’ children so we have a chance to exercise our bodies and still
ensure our children are safe.
My children have participated in the cooperative preschool that houses within the same walls. My children and I go to release energy with games when the weather outside proves to be
unwelcoming for park play.
My entire family participates as athletes and coaches in recreation league sports. These programs give our children so many lessons on responsibility, team work, and goal setting.
This building is crucial to the development of youth and community. Losing this venue will negatively affect a multitude of demographics of Jefferson County. Keep families rooted. Keep
health and involvement a goal for our community. Please, please save the Recreation Center. For all of our futures.
Sincerely,
Kara O’Connell
