Hi Heather, Heidi, and Greg, I am writing to you in my personal capacity, not as a member of the Port Townsend City Council or in my role as Mayor. I understand that the County is currently facing significant budgetary challenges; however, I am deeply dismayed to hear that cutting funding for the Recreation Center is still being considered. The Rec Center serves as a vital community hub, particularly for children and the elderly. Eliminating it would send a disappointing message to young families who already feel underrepresented and undervalued in our community. My family is a part of the Port Townsend Cooperative Playschool, which has held its sessions at the Rec Center for as long as I can remember. This program plays a crucial role in socializing toddlers and equipping parents with the skills needed to effectively raise their children. The closure of the Rec Center would jeopardize Playschool's continuation. Additionally, I provide pro bono legal services for low-income seniors, and we rely on the Rec Center for hosting legal clinics. Without it, many low-income residents may lose access to essential legal assistance. The Rec Center also offers a wide range of recreational activities that benefit our community. My wife, along with her mother and many others, attends Zumba classes at the Rec Center three times a week. My brother and a close friend enjoy playing basketball in the gym. The playground is frequently filled with children, and the Rec Center is a popular venue for birthday parties. Just this morning, I noticed a senior yoga/exercise class taking place in the upstairs room while bringing my daughter to Playschool. The diverse and consistent use of the facility underscores its importance to our community. Cutting the Rec Center would be a regressive decision that diverts focus from the very segments of our community that need our support. I strongly urge you to explore alternative solutions for budget savings. Thank you. Best, David J. Faber
