Hello Jefferson County Commissioners, (Heidi Eisenhour, Heather Dudley-Nollette, and Greg Brotherton) My name is Kevin Reiswig. I am a 38 year old Port Townsend resident, business owner, husband (my wife is Alex Chebuhar--teacher at Chimacum Creek Primary School), and father of two young children (Ages 4 and 2). I recently learned that you all are considering cutting funding for the Port Townsend Rec Center. I feel motivated to write to you all to tell you what an amazing resource this is for families and children. I took my children to the playschool there when they were very young, and now we continue to use the space when it is open to play and be with friends. This space has so much potential for adding value to our community--so much so that I would even go as far as to say you should put MORE money into the Rec Center, and certainly not less. One example of how thinking creatively about this space has given a boost to our community is the new monthly Skate Jam that started last year at the Rec Center. Tons of kids and parents come out to have fun and be together at these events. The gym gets packed. You should come check it out and skate with us! As you all consider the value of the Rec Center to our community, I would encourage you to think of the young families who rely on assets like the Rec Center, especially in the winter months, for recreation. Chris and Samantha do a great job at keeping the space running, even on the meager funds that currently exist. The Rec Center could realize its full potential value to our community if it were given the proper chance to thrive. More successful events like Skate Jam could be hosted, and infrastructure could be improved if funds were made available. Even if you change nothing about its funding, the Rec Center as it currently exists is far far better for Jefferson County families than having nothing at all. Kevin Reiswig
