As a young adult who grew up in this town, the only place I can currently afford to rent is a little shed with no shower, no bathroom and only a hose for cold running water. That's the circumstances I live so I can stay in town. I have a few fears though about more development, and I hope that these will be considered. It seems with more housing often comes more development in general, like chainstores and box stores moving in. I don't want those in my town, and I live here to escape from that. A defining feature of this town is our local businesses that sell organic, ethical products and I do not want the development plan to endanger them and fill our town with poisonous crap. I also want to make sure to mitigate clearcutting our forests for development as much as possible, and if it must be done, make sure that the developed land gives back to the ecosystem. Instead of green lawns that everyone is allergic to, plant native plants and flowers for the pollinators. And I want to know that the housing that is built is being done so with sustainability in mind. Lastly, I want to know that the definition of affordable housing is in fact rent that is within 30% of the local minimum wage. For single occupancy, someone working a minimum wage job will be able to afford to live here and not work 3 jobs to survive. This is crucial. Thank you for hearing me. For years, we’ve relied on the idea that preserving “small town charm” is enough to sustain us — but the reality tells a different story. With a poverty rate of 12.6%, well above the state average, and a median household income around $71,000, too many people who live and work here are struggling to afford basic needs. Out of roughly 33,300 residents, about 4,200 people are living below the poverty line — many of them seniors, service workers, caregivers, and young families. We need to acknowledge what isn’t working: the lack of affordable housing, limited job opportunities, and the absence of accessible commercial resources are making it harder for families to stay here. Many younger and working-age adults simply cannot afford rent, let alone purchase a home — and those who grew up here are being priced out of their own community. If we want Jefferson County to thrive — rather than slowly age out — we need responsible economic growth. That means bringing in employment opportunities, resources, and commercial development in areas that make sense, such as Chimacum, Hadlock, Center Valley, Beaver Valley, and along the 104/101 corridor. A thoughtfully placed big-box store or commercial district wouldn’t destroy the character of Port Townsend — it would provide jobs, tax revenue, stability, and access to basic necessities for residents who shouldn’t have to travel 30–60 miles for affordable groceries, clothing, or essential goods. We can protect our historic downtown and rural character while still creating pathways for working families, young adults, and future generations to build a life here. Other communities — like Poulsbo — have proven that heritage and growth can coexist when planned intentionally. The truth is simple: without affordable housing and livable wages, we cannot sustain a balanced or diverse population. Growth isn’t the enemy — stagnation is. It’s time to plan for a Jefferson County where everyone — not just the retired, wealthy, or already established — has the opportunity to live, work, and belong.Yes City hall meeting 12-8-25 /\\X , Aei L/ <!1-,,., L 17- ,1A ,v\ i d.o il kg g: ; lrv,n* Cirr,I,i-) rj iiled-a.yi.r(r-+- f /i-i!,tf --r tl ei 1a,i ^ri rto,tr5 F5LT !..1 .\n <.r{ j *rr!
