Commissioners, My name is Nick, and I'm currently serving as board president of the Port Townsend Cooperative Playschool. I'm writing to urge you to find a way to keep our Recreation Center open in the face of the imminent county budget cuts. The Rec Center provides so much for so many, and for the Playschool, it is our home. Every week, little ones and their families come to play, to read, to sing and listen and interact with others. For many, this is their first time in a "school" environment: their first time sitting in a circle, their first time singing in a group, their first time needing to share with another little person who wants the same little toy train. That little train and its tracks, the display of children's books, the play food in the play kitchens...all of these things collected over the last five decades of the Playschool's existence and sitting there in that special room of the PT Rec Center have provided a new world of exploration for so many kids over the years. I am personally so grateful to have been a part of the Playschool with my daughter over the last two years, giving her a safe, fun, and welcoming space to grow, and giving both her and myself the chance to make connections with other local families. Suddenly losing our space would be an immense challenge that I'm not sure the cooperative is positioned to overcome. I know that our Playschool is one of many groups that would be significantly impacted by losing such an important community gathering place. I implore you to please make every effort possible to keep it open, and to keep it serving our community. Thank you for listening. Nick Magles Board President - Port Townsend Cooperative Playschool
