Dear Washington Elected Officials
Over the past year, there have been several efforts in Washington DC to sell off our national parks, forest, wildlife refuges and other public lands or mass firing of the hard-working
federal employees that managed these important landscapes. More than 400 Washington stakeholders <https://wawild.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/WA-State-Federal-Public-Lands-Supporter-List-063025.pd
f> have weighed in opposing public lands sell off to date. A national bipartisan coalition was successful in eliminating a public land sell off provision from the budget bill back in
July. Thank You!
However, this fight is not over. Powerful entities in Washington DC continue to push forward a public land sell off agenda. Most recently is the proposed nomination of Steve Pearce as
the Director of the Bureau of Land Management, the largest public lands management agency in the federal government (including more than 400,000 acres of BLM lands here in Washington
State like the Yakima River Canyon, Juniper Dunes Wilderness and Chopaka Mountain Wilderness Study Area).
Steve Pearce has demonstrated as a former Congressman from New Mexico that he is an unabashed supporter of selling off federal public lands and a concerning choice to head up the Bureau
of Land Management. The confirmation hearing and vote in the U.S. Senate is expected to happen in early January and we want to make sure that our Washington Senators (Murray and Cantwell)
understand the strong opposition to public lands sell off and this nominee from Washington State.
Please consider adding your name to the attached letter signed by more than 120 elected officials and local stakeholders to Senators Murray and Cantwell urging them to oppose Steve Pearce's
nomination NO LATER THAN FRIDAY JANUARY 9, 2026. To sign on, just replay to this email with your name, title and affiliation.
Thanks for your attention to this important issue.
