Good afternoon, Ms. Meredith - I'm writing to request that the DOT considers placing a traffic light at the intersection of Hwy 104 and Center Road in Quilcene, Jefferson County.
It is incredibly dangerous to get on to Hwy 104 from Center Road (or exit from 104 headed east). Many years ago I lost a student there, Carl Skogen, a father of 2 children. Yesterday,
January 5th, a very bad accident occurred, sending several people to 3 hospitals. There have been many accidents at that intersection, some more serious than others, but all mostly
preventable.
Several years ago when the DOT was performing a bit of construction improvement at that location, a temporary traffic signal was placed and it was great! All of us entering/exiting
104 were so grateful and felt very safe. The traffic on 104 headed both east and west did not appear to be too inconvenienced - no more than the slowdown on current roundabouts.
I propose that a traffic light be permanently placed there, with a short timer - enough to allow a few cars to enter 104, yet not inconvenience the wait time of drivers headed east/west.
A traffic signal is logical, since there is not sufficient room for a roundabout due to the overpass.
Please consider installing such a safety mechanism that will save lives. We are very fortunate to have outstanding emergency services in our county, but they certainly have enough calls
to make without having to respond to traffic accidents that can be avoided by a simple solution.
