HomeMy WebLinkAboutCONSENT Approval of County Logo for Port project JEFFERSON COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS CONSENT AGENDA REQUEST TO: Board of County Commissioners FROM: Josh D.Peters,County Administrator DATE: January 20,2026 SUBJECT: APPROVAL re: County Support for Port of Port Townsend Capital Budget Request for Port Townsend Bay Saltwater Estuary Restoration & Stormwater Project STATEMENT OF ISSUE: The Port of Port Townsend (Port) plans to submit a Capital Budget request to the State Legislature this week for a Port Townsend Bay saltwater estuary restoration project. See the attached two-page project description. The Port has asked for County support for the project/request. The support would take the form of adding the Jefferson County logo to the Port's request materials. ANALYSIS: In general,the Legislature looks favorably upon projects that have support from multiple partners. FISCAL IMPACT: There is no direct impact on the County's budget for supporting the Port's project. RECOMMENDATION: Approve the request to add the Jefferson County logo to the Port's Capital Budget request for this estuary restoration project. REVIEWED BY: (. 1 02,15 I ( J 6�D. In addition to the signigicant environmental benefits,this projects supports the future expansion of the Port Townsend Boatyard, the completion of the SR 20/Sims Way stormwater project, realignment of the Larry Scott Train and generational viability of Jefferson County's working waterfront. Yard K - Berm .:► ': _ Boat Haven 4 Boat Yard Existing Wetland Larry Scott Trail New Open iiiNew Open Port Bottom Culvert Bottom Culvert Townsend Bay Supporting the Ocean Economy since 1924 KEY PROJECT BENEFITS: - Restores approximately five acres of nearshore saltwater estuary that has been cut off from Port Townsend Bay since the railroad was built nearly 100 years ago. - Improves water quality in that nearshore estuary. - Improves water quality to Port Townsend Bay by adding additional"polishing"for the Sims Way/WSDOT SR 20 stormwater through this five acre estuary. - Protects the Port Townsend Boatyard from king tide/storm surge and rising seas. - Establishes a new Larry Scott Trail spur that connects to a planned crossing to the Haines Place Park and Ride (design study already funded). - Has significant economic benefits for the marine trades sector. ECONOMIC IMPACT:The project protects the marine trades sector in Jefferson County which represents 20% of the jobs in our community.
