Since 2022, Jefferson County Public Works has worked with consultants and the Solid Waste Facilities Task Force to plan a new transfer station to replace the existing facility located
at 325 County Landfill Rd. in Port Townsend. Built in 1993, the current facility can no longer meet the future needs of Jefferson County residents. It is too small to accommodate the
increased customer demand, requires substantial capital repairs, and relies on aging infrastructure in need of replacement.
According to Solid Waste Program Manager Al Cairns, “We have increased staffing over the years to match the increase in material volume and improved operational efficiencies in every
area we could. However, the transfer station has operated at more than 40% over its designed capacity for over a decade. We simply need to build a new and more efficient facility for
the next 40 years.”
Community members are invited to join the Board of County Commissioners and Solid Waste Facility Task Force on January 26 at 6:00 p.m. at the Tri Area Community Center (10 W Valley Rd.,
Chimacum). At this meeting, Public Works staff will explain how the preferred site for the new facility location was determined and they will also reveal the first draft of the conceptual
design. The meeting agenda includes ample time to hear and respond to public comments.
Heidi Eisenhour, District 2 County Commissioner and the Board of County Commissioners’ representative on the Solid Waste Advisory Committee, encourages public participation, saying,
“Please join us for this meeting. A lot of work has gone into this proposal. Come learn what we have learned through the work of our Solid Waste Facilities Task Force. This will be
a big change for our community, and we want to hear from you!”
