KPTZ Enters New Chapter with Leadership Realignment and Renewed Focus on Community Engagement
Port Townsend, WA — Radio Port Townsend is building for the future—strengthening KPTZ to remain independent, resilient, and deeply rooted in the community we serve. As KPTZ moves into
2026, the station is marking an important transition—shifting from a period of intensive infrastructure development toward deeper community connection, expanded programming, and long-term
organizational sustainability.
Over the past several years, KPTZ has devoted significant energy to foundational work, including moving into new studios and completing a long-planned antenna and transmission upgrade.
With those major projects now largely complete, the station is turning more fully toward the community-facing side of its mission.
Through recent strategic planning sessions and a January staff planning retreat, the KPTZ Board of Directors and staff have aligned around a shared goal: ensuring that a growing and
increasingly community-engaged KPTZ has the structure, clarity, and capacity needed to thrive.
Refined Leadership Structure
As of January 1, KPTZ has refined its leadership structure by dividing the former General Manager role into two distinct positions:
Executive Director, responsible for working closely with the board and guiding the overall direction of KPTZ, with particular focus on nonprofit leadership, community engagement, and
organizational sustainability.
Operations Director, focused on the day-to-day operational and technical needs of the station, ensuring broadcast reliability and system resilience.
Decentralizing leadership better supports both staff wellbeing and the station’s long-term needs. As newly named executive director Genevieve Barlow mentioned in the January 19 broadcast
of “Attention Please” on KPTZ <https://kptz.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6df05bfd2eaa0ab6bf92aa5cf&id=0ee971ce74&e=eba4e3a8b6> : “We have the most robust staff KPTZ has had since
we were founded in 2011—not to mention an incredible richness of volunteer energy here at the station every day of the year. I'm excited to continue working on the things that KPTZ
has been doing exceptionally well, and to help fulfill our simplest and our greatest purpose: to be an amplifier for the voices in our community.”
Looking Ahead
With technical and operational foundations strengthened, KPTZ is focusing on intentional community presence, expanded training and volunteer opportunities, more consistent on-air promotion,
emergency communications preparedness, and increased visibility at local events throughout Jefferson County.
Upcoming efforts include public communications outlining these changes, on-air conversations about the station’s direction, and opportunities for volunteers and community members to
engage directly with staff and leadership.
Gratitude and Community Support
As KPTZ enters this new chapter, the station remains committed to serving as a vibrant, independent, and deeply local voice—created by and for the community.
“KPTZ is where it is today because of extraordinary contributions from so many people,” said Jon Pinnow, board president. “Staff, volunteers, board members, donors — there are uncountable
hours of care and leadership that built this foundation. We honor that gift by continuing to strengthen and serve the community of this place we are lucky to call home.”
