Commissioners: I am writing to express my strong endorsement of Jim Friedman's appointment to the Solid Waste Advisory Committee. Mr. Friedman and I have discussed at length the waste management challenges facing Jefferson County's rural communities. These challenges differ materially from those in developed areas of the county. South county residents contend with limited access to refuse disposal, constrained household budgets, and a documented pattern of service reductions that have historically hit these areas first and hardest. The Committee needs members who understand this firsthand. The County also faces structural pressures. The Recycling Reform Act will mandate a rollback of the County's recent shift to fee-for-service recycling, directly impacting revenue assumptions. The planned transfer station relocation will introduce additional capital and operational costs, some of which may be unexpected. Effective oversight of these transitions demands pragmatism, attention to detail, and a willingness to ask hard questions—and to hear the answers. Jim is methodical, direct, and committed to ensuring that policy decisions are grounded in operational and financial reality rather than convenience. He does the homework many others overlook. I urge you to approve his appointment.
