Public lands: Counties receive first Secure Rural Schools payments
Following NACo's sustained advocacy and the enactment of the Secure Rural Schools Reauthorization Act of 2025 (P.L. 119-58), the U.S. Forest Service announced it will distribute more
than $182 million in retroactive FY 2024 payments to timber-dependent counties – the first SRS payments in nearly two years. These funds support essential county services including
education, transportation and public safety in counties with National Forest System land. Counties have yet to receive reconciliation payments for FY 2025, and NACo will continue advocating

County leaders update NACo's Immigration Consensus Principles
Recognizing the evolving federal landscape and changing needs on the ground, NACo recently convened a bipartisan group of county officials – including commissioners, supervisors, sheriffs
and social services directors – to update the NACo Immigration Consensus Principles. Originally developed in 2018, the revised principles call for meaningful county involvement in federal
policymaking, oppose the use of unrelated federal funding as leverage, emphasize transparency and cost reimbursement in enforcement interactions, support modernized work authorization
systems and urge greater stability, coordination and advance notice from federal partners. The updated principles provide NACo with a modernized, bipartisan framework to guide future
