Judicial Update: Demolition Order and Related Code Enforcement Fines
A recent Illinois appellate case provides a clear example of how municipalities can enforce property maintenance codes. The court upheld a demolition order for a hazardous, partially
built vacant property, emphasizing that owners must address safety violations in a timely manner. It also clarified that fines for code violations can only be calculated up to the date
of the courts order, not after.
