This year, we step confidently into our next chapter. We are pleased to welcome John Hurley as MDC’s new Chief Executive Officer, a leader whose experience, values, and vision align deeply with our commitment to Pierce County. For more than six decades, MDC has walked alongside our neighbors through housing instability, behavioral health challenges, withdrawal management, education and employment barriers, and moments of profound transition. As a nonprofit Community Action Agency established in 1964, we remain dedicated to reducing poverty and promoting self-sufficiency through integrated, whole-person care. This moment is not simply about leadership change, it is about building on momentum and looking ahead with intention. The organization’s Board of Directors has initiated a comprehensive recruitment process to identify the agency’s next Executive Director. Pauletto has served WAGAP since 2022, first as the Associate Director and then as the Executive Director. She guided the organization through expanded programming, strengthened community partnerships, and found ways to sustain services in a challenging funding climate. During her tenure, WAGAP deepened its impact across housing stability, food security, energy assistance, and supportive services for families and individuals facing economic hardship. “Jennifer has been an incredible asset for WAGAP and will be sorely missed,” said David Quesnel the Chair of WAGAP’s Board of Directors. The Board is committed to a smooth transition for the staff and community. Our role at Commerce is to make that call easier to answer with the goal of lifting struggling families and individuals out of poverty and toward prosperity. Commerce staff recently joined agency leaders from Washington State Community Action Partnership <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=020c4608b8&e=290 850492e> for an in-person summit focused on strengthening our partnership. Five members of our Executive Leadership Team participated in a panel discussion, and Commerce staff engaged in roundtables on community services, energy, and housing—sharing ideas, listening, and identifying ways to better serve families across the state. Interim Director Sarah Clifthorne joined the conversation and closed the summit with reflections on our shared commitment to equitable outcomes for the communities we serve. Thank you to Washington’s Community Action leaders for your candor, collaboration, and relentless focus on people. Together, we will continue to invest in communities, build solutions, and serve with urgency and care. He’d spent time in ICE detention and was in and out of treatment for addiction. “I really had no focus at all,” he says. “All I knew was crime and crummy people.” But all that changed that year when a stranger named Jim noticed that Scott had a passion for music. “If you’re serious about this,” Jim told him, “I can get you an internship.” Soon, Scott was sitting in on recording sessions with the likes of Audioslave and Alice In Chains while rubbing shoulders with record executives at Seattle’s storied Bad Animals studio. “I just sort of clung on to them and was like, ‘Teach me, teach me, teach me,’” he says. “And it all had to do with that one guy who gave me an opportunity.” From mentee to mentor Today, Scott has a new passion: Being the “Jim” for the roughly 100 kids and teens who live with their families at Solid Ground’s <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda 818ebd4ce40eb&id=656db25f1e&e=290850492e> Sand Point Housing <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=ebb8ccfd20&e=290850492e> . As the Children & Families Program Manager there, Scott works to create opportunities for kids who’ve experienced homelessness and other traumatic experiences, helping them find and pursue their passions. Soon, Mysun moved to an electronic keyboard he’d brought when his neighbor friend Kaylan popped into the room and started banging away on a nearby set of drums. As their mother, Jessica knows how important it is to ensure they thrive. She also knows how expensive it can be to provide after-school activities, especially on a tight family budget. That’s where the HopeSource <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ac f3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=b36ab6e7ca&e=290850492e> Youth Scholarship Program comes into play. Jessica’s family the scholarships to make sure that ongoing activities like swimming lessons, dance, soccer, and music continue in her children’s lives, even when they don’t fit into the family budget. “I’m a big, big fan of having kids in sports and activities, things that they enjoy. It’s important to be part of a team, make friends and set goals.” But the strategy isn’t one-size-fits-all. Each child needs something different. “For my youngest, she has a lot of energy. Participating in sports gives her an outlet. Plus she’s super social. Soccer gives her a boost.” Her son has played music since elementary school. Jessica uses the scholarships to help pay for his instrument rental, giving him confidence as he enters high school. It provides the insight Community Action Agencies need to plan effectively, learn continuously, and respond to changing community conditions. This two-part virtual Skill Builder is designed for staff who lead or manage the community assessment process and want to deepen both the quality and usefulness of their work. This training goes beyond compliance to focus on how to design and conduct community assessments that combine meaningful data with lived experience, including the perspectives of people with low incomes. Participants will explore how to move from a one-time assessment to an ongoing learning approach and how to use findings to inform planning, priorities, and decision-making across the agency. Under the new rule, local housing authorities, including public housing agencies or property owners, would be required to report undocumented immigrants to the Department of Homeland Security. It would also require every resident of a household receiving HUD funding to prove their citizenship or eligibility status. The rule is the latest part of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, and has been expected since last year <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40 eb&id=8a94906bf8&e=290850492e> . The rule was published in the Federal Register on Friday, and will be open for public comment for 60 days. Housing advocates have been preparing for the possibility that the Trump administration would use HUD for immigration enforcement <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=a3213212d4&e=290850492e> since taking office, a move that they have called dangerous <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=fd7d2062d8&e=290850492e> and one they warned would also lead to citizens being displaced. Currently, undocumented immigrants are not eligible for federal rent aid but can live with family members who are. The federal subsidies only cover the family members with eligible legal status. This moment calls for bold, values-driven leadership that centers housing justice, lived expertise, and cross-sector collaboration. We are at a critical juncture. Rising housing insecurity, shifting political landscapes, uncertain funding environments, and deep community needs demand an urgent, unified response. The summit will explore: * What do leaders need to meet this moment? * What does this moment need from leaders? In contrast to previous conferences, this Summit will be a smaller convening of leaders across the homelessness system. A track-focused agenda will allow for targeted content and peer connection that explores each leader’s unique challenges and opportunities for meeting the moment.
