Dear John,
February may go down in history as the most destructive month ever for climate and environmental protections. For more than a decade, the Sierra Club has fought tirelessly – and won
– historic protections for our clean air and water and to require the federal government to uphold its responsibility to protect our collective future. We knew that Donald Trump’s election
in 2024 would mean we will have to fiercely defend these victories, and we are ready for this fight.
Over the past few weeks, the Trump administration rescinded the EPA's endangerment finding — the legal cornerstone of federal climate action that the Sierra Club helped establish more
than two decades ago. It moved to bail out aging coal plants, keep others open that were slated to close, and is seeking to gut mercury and air toxics standards (MATS) that protect
us from deadly pollutants. Any one of these actions would be a serious attack. Together, they represent a coordinated assault on the life-saving environmental protections that Americans
depend on.
We are not standing by. We are fighting back in the courts and in the court of public opinion. Immediately after the endangerment finding repeal, the Sierra Club and our partners filed
suit against the EPA to block this illegal action. The science hasn't changed. The law hasn't changed. And we intend to hold this administration accountable — just as we have across
administrations for decades. We have litigated federal climate standards longer than any other organization in the country, and that experience and resolve are exactly what this moment
demands.
As we continue to advance a strong defense at the federal level, we are also winning crucial victories at the state and local level. In Illinois, Governor Pritzker signed one of the
most ambitious clean energy laws in the nation — a law the Sierra Club helped deliver. In Utah, our rapid mobilization of more than 250 constituents in under 24 hours saved a renewable
energy program from being gutted in the legislature. In New York, we helped build the coalition that kept offshore wind construction moving forward despite federal obstruction. These
victories don't always make national headlines, but they are building the durable, state-by-state, community-by-community foundation that no administration can easily undo.
The threats are serious, but so is the movement you are powering. The Sierra Club's unique strength comes from our ability to work in the courts, legislative bodies, media and, when
necessary, the streets. Our unique power comes from our hundreds of staff, thousands of volunteer leaders and millions of dedicated members and supporters, like you, across the country.
That combination is what won the endangerment finding in the first place, and it is what will carry us through this challenging chapter. Sierra Club is built for moments like this —
and with your continued support and partnership, we will prevail.
With gratitude,

SPOTLIGHT: Sierra Club in the News
Sierra Club has been the go-to source for reporters looking for expert insights and the perspective of environmental movement organizations on the bevy attacks this month from the Trump
administration. From our lawyers discussing our crucial litigation against against the proposed rollbacks to our campaign heads providing key insights on what’s driving the administration’s
deregulatory agenda (and why we can’t – and won’t – let them win), Sierra Club voices have been a staple this month in the country’s biggest national publications and regional media
alike – including being quoted twice (on top of a couple of mentions of our work) in the New York Times on the rescission the EPA's endangerment finding <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=eyJk

Black History Month

Black History Month by standing up for equitable access and honest history on our public lands.
On February 4, Rosa Parks' birthday, our Outdoors For All and Clean Transportation for All campaigns celebrated Transit Equity Day at the Frankfort, KY Transit Center, where residents,
workers, and riders gathered to affirm the fundamental right to reliable, affordable public transportation. Transit is essential civic infrastructure that supports not only equity and
economic opportunity but environmental sustainability. Frankfort Mayor Layne Wilkerson delivered a proclamation recognizing public transit as a civil right and honoring Black History
Month.
Then, Sierra Club’s Outdoors For All campaign joined our Georgia Chapter and HBCUs Outside to ascend Stone Mountain, the world’s largest memorial to the Confederacy, just outside of
Atlanta, GA. Along with 50 students from Morehouse College, Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University, and community leaders, we celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Black History Month
in nature and discussed issues of belonging. Following the outing, a brunch and networking event featured a panel discussion on increasing equitable access to nature (led by Simone
Adams of Color My Outdoors) and community organizing, challenging the state-sponsored memorialization of the Confederacy (led by Stone Mountain Action Coalition).
Also this month, Sierra Club joined a Rally to Restore Truth in Pennsylvania, following the Trump administration’s removal last month of signage that examined the legacy of slavery at
Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park. Last week, a federal judge ordered the Trump Administration to restore signage! <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=eyJkZWtJZCI6IjAwYjgwOGY

and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment
of future generations.” As Outdoors For All deputy director Gerry James put it, “This means not just protecting the land itself, it's also about honoring the full depth of the stories
those places hold. The good, the bad, and the ugly.”
Hear, hear.
Sierra Club Military Outdoors on Oprah
Our work leading transformative and healing outings with military service members and veterans was lifted up this month on Oprah Winfrey’s podcast <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=eyJkZWtJZCI

in). Author Dacher Keltner was on to promote his new book on the science of wonder and awe and discussed a memorable experience attending one of our rafting trips with military veterans.
A study performed with trip participants showed that time spent in nature can significantly reduce cortisol and the symptoms of post-traumatic stress. “For those of us experiencing
trauma or grief, be thinking about those immersive experiences of awe like that half-day rafting trip. I’m really excited about how awe can be used as a tool for transforming grief
and trauma,” said Keltner. We’re thrilled that the work of our Military Outdoors program continues to inform new conversations about the science of awe and how nature heals.
