Coalition E-News: February 2026   “Life Legislative session moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” - Ferris Bueller, or anyone who’s experienced a Supplemental session Another month of session in the books! February brought a rapid series of legislative deadlines and actions - from Policy Committee cutoff to both chambers dropping their proposed budgets - that narrowed the field of bills and shifted focus to budget negotiations. The Coalition’s been actively engaged throughout. Here are some highlights: - We sent letters urging House and Senate budget writers to include the State Tribal Recreation Impacts Initiative (STRII) funding proposed in the Governor’s budget. - We testified on two bills that would have negatively affected the availability of funds in the WWRP's Habitat Conservation Account. These bills did not move forward. - We joined partners in supporting the House’s proposal for recreation lands maintenance funding. This funding helps our state agencies keep recreation sites like campgrounds and trails open and maintained. While neither budget is ideal, the Senate cuts are significantly deeper - their proposed funding level is 40% lower than the level in the 2023-2025 budget. With session scheduled to adjourn March 12, the next two weeks will be pivotal as lawmakers finalize spending plans, and as policy bills continue moving through the opposite chamber. We're closely watching the proposed cuts to operations and maintenance funding at the Department of Fish & Wildlife, Department of Natural Resources, and State Parks. Many thanks to WTA for taking the lead in advocacy efforts to fund the maintenance of these well-loved recreation sites. While significant work remains, we’re also looking ahead. Ribbon-cuttings for recently completed WWRP projects are being scheduled across the state, and Coalition staff will soon begin outreach to legislators and community organizations for site tours. Stay tuned for more details in the months ahead. On-site tours are a powerful way to showcase the impact of these investments firsthand, particularly ahead of our big push for the WWRP in 2027. Thanks to all of our partners for their hard work and collaboration over the last month. Onward! Nathaniel Rees Policy & Communications Manager, WWRC   Cheers to Conservation: WWRC Happy Hour and Birthday Gathering <https://media2.charityengine.net/WF/_transactionServerFiles/1161/IMG-20250313-WA0008.jpg> Join us on Thursday, March 12, 2026, for our second annual WWRC Happy Hour and Birthday Celebration at the BluWater Bistro! We look forward to celebrating together!   Trails and Ballfields: The Quiet Infrastructure that Supports Washington’s $25 Billion Outdoor Recreation Economy <https://media2.charityengine.net/WF/_transactionServerFiles/1161/family-on-forest-road-by-Alberto-Casetta-on-Unsplash-1536x1152.jpg> What if your weekend in the woods was actually an investment in Washington’s economy?  Jobs, tax revenue, and consumer spending may not be top of mind when you’re playing outside. But whether you think about it or not, every time you hit a trail, cast a line, or visit a local park, you’re helping drive one of Washington’s biggest economic engines: outdoor recreation.  The Recreation and Conservation Office’s Economic Analysis of Outdoor Recreation in WA State shows that in 2024 alone, outdoor recreation generated $25.2 billion in consumer spending and supported more than 237,000 jobs across Washington. When that spending ripples through local economies – from restaurants and gear shops to guiding services and tour companies – it amounts to $33.1 billion in total economic activity and $5.1 billion in state and local tax revenue. Whew. Those numbers are so large they can be a bit blinding. Let’s not lose sight of why they matter. Using a WWRP Trails grant, the City acquired 55 acres of forested uplands in the Green Mountain area of Clark County in 2021. The City plans to transform the area into a vibrant recreation destination and a community gathering place in the years ahead – a vision made possible by this initial WWRP investment. Green Mountain – An Investment for the Future Originally slated for residential development, the 55-acre Green Mountain property will instead remain open and accessible to the public. That means future trailheads, picnic facilities, scenic viewpoints, and trail connections – including linkages to the beloved Lacamas Lake trail system - for recreationists and outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy.
