Just read an article by Scott France in “The Jefferson County Beacon” regarding the recent ICG meeting . interesting to read the quote by Patty Schumacher.
“The ICG must build trust that supports courageous conversations to determine the type of economic framework that we want to create—to invite the right people to the table, and that
it’s inclusive so the framework represents all aspects that trigger economic vitality—housing, water and food systems, electrical grid capacity, emergency preparedness,” Schmucker said.
Schmucker and County Commissioner Heidi Eisenhower were encouraged by what they saw as an ICG meeting that was more inclusive than most past meetings.”
No mention of her work in her efforts to develop the Discovery Bay Golf Course, a very “non-affordable housing development “. In fact there has been no mention to the public of this
development by Our Commisioneer’s or local news,I.e. PT Leader of PNT
The residents of Port Townsend and the county are aware of the continued pressure on the City Council for solutions for Affordable Housing. Since 2021 I have been part of a group that
filed legal action to stop homes being built at the Discovery Bay Golf Course. Although we did not win in whole, the approved number of homes was reduced from 98 to 48 pending new SEPA
updates.
In the past months we have met with a potential buyer, Collin Thompson, on two occasions.
Mr Thompson wants to build 48 homes with approved ADU’s, hotel, high end restaurant & Wellness Center at the Discovery Bay Golf course. This information was sent to the Leader and PDN,
who printed nothing. To Date there has been no mention of this in The PT Leader of PDN. Many people living in the county have no idea that this is taking place nor do many in the city
limits of Port Townsend.
initially stated, we lost the appeal but the current or new owners will have to complete new SEPA requirements , and if they do not begin building by November 2026 the process for approval
will have to start the approval/application process over.
The county administrator was very forthcoming in providing all emails between the Nicolas Hurtado (present owner who is Chilean Resident) and his representative here. And he provided
the November 2026 deadline.
In the initial meeting with sales representatives & potential new buyer he presented the pricing. First phase 400-600k, second phase 600-800k . In our second meeting , prices jumped
to 600-800k. And recently I received an update ( see below) new prices due to construction cost, 850-1.250 million.
Although this property development is in the county, it will impact us all. The residents near this proposed development are asking County Administers & County Commissioners maintain
compliance of all environmental regulations insuring who ever develops this historic golf course, ensure all SEPA requirements are met.
Of course we would like the golf course remain, but Change is inevitable, but we all must do what we
can to insure compliance.
