Do not open attachments or click on links if you are not expecting them. Hello Commissioners, I am writing again regarding the continued uncertainty surrounding the future of the Rec Center and county recreation programming. I want to express my deep disappointment that, despite the clear and ongoing need in our community, the possibility of reducing or eliminating these programs still remains. In my role as an educator in East Jefferson County—and as a parent and volunteer coach—I see firsthand how essential these programs are. Opportunities for young people in our community are already limited. The Rec Center and its associated programming are not supplemental; they are one of the few consistent, accessible spaces where youth and families can gather, build relationships, and stay engaged in positive, healthy activities. What is especially difficult to reconcile is the contradiction between this potential decision and the county’s stated priority to increase youth engagement. Recreation programs are one of the most effective, proven ways we currently achieve that goal. They reach a wide range of youth, provide structured and inclusive opportunities, and foster the very sense of belonging and connection that we say we want to strengthen. To consider reducing or removing one of the county’s most successful tools for youth engagement feels fundamentally misaligned with those priorities. I understand that the county is facing difficult financial decisions. However, the continued threat to these programs signals a need to more fully recognize their value—not just as services, but as essential infrastructure for community wellbeing. The loss or reduction of these programs would not only impact individual families but would weaken one of the few systems we have that consistently brings people together across our community. I urge you, again, to prioritize the preservation and support of the Rec Center and youth recreation programming. The need is evident, the impact is measurable, and the alignment with community goals is clear. Thank you for your continued service and for taking this concern seriously. Sincerely, Devon Buckham
