Dear John,
As the first signals of spring emerge across Washington, we find ourselves in a moment that invites both reflection and resolve. This year’s legislative session carried both progress
and disappointment—none more sobering than the loss of more than $500 million in Climate Commitment Act funding. But what stands out most is how Sierra Club members and volunteers responded.
With clarity and persistence, you pushed forward on salmon recovery and climate protections while helping stop a misguided effort to prop up the nuclear industry. Across hearing rooms,
legislative offices and town halls alike, you showed what principled, grassroots advocacy looks like in practice.
That spirit must now expand to meet the scale of the moment ahead. The challenges we face—on climate, democracy, and public lands—are profound, and the stakes of this fall’s elections
could not be higher. Spring and summer are not a pause between legislative sessions; they are the proving ground for the people-powered movement we need to build. This is our moment
to deepen relationships, bring new voices into the fold, and create spaces where more Washingtonians see themselves as advocates for change. As a chapter, we are committed to opening
those doors wider than ever—equipping you with the tools, opportunities, and community to take action and bring others with you.
Our first opportunity comes quickly. On March 28th, we’ll be gathering for No Kings 3. Sierra Club will be on the ground in Seattle, Bellingham, Vancouver, Olympia, Spokane, Edmonds,
and Everett. We hope you’ll stop by, connect with fellow advocates, and help set the tone for the months ahead.
Ben Avery

When Big Tech Meets a Grassroots Movement: The Rise and Fall of Washington's Data Center Bill this Legislative Session
by Ben Avery, Chapter Director, Sierra Club Washington State
In November, as Governor Bob Ferguson’s data center task force concluded its work, an unmistakable message was delivered: Washington’s rapidly expanding data center industry posed real
questions about electricity demand, water use, climate goals, and who ultimately pays for the infrastructure required to support it.
Two lawmakers — Rep. Beth Doglio (D-22) and Sen. Sharon Shewmake (D-42) — backed by a coalition of environmental groups and tribal nations, began crafting what would eventually become
House Bill 2515, an ambitious attempt to establish guardrails for one of the fastest-growing and least transparent industries in Washington’s economy...

How Climate Change is Fueling the Fight for Immigration Justice
by Diane Shisk, Equity and Justice Committee, Sierra Club Washington State
Climate-related disasters and extreme heat are making parts of the world unlivable, uprooting 25-30 million people each year. Natural disasters linked to climate change are now one of
the main drivers of human displacement in Latin America: 2.1 million new internal displacements were recorded in 2023 alone. (Conflict, violence, and poverty are other contributing
causes.) In many countries, extreme weather patterns have increased poverty and displaced families that count on agriculture to sustain themselves.
Climate change makes every other crisis people face more difficult. It deepens economic hardships and other challenges, forcing people to leave their homes and the lives they know. Most
climate migration is within countries. Families first try to find work and livelihood alternatives in their homelands. But they can’t always find a way to sustain themselves, leaving
them with no option but to seek refuge in another country...

Speak Up for the Public Lands of Western Oregon and our Shared Watersheds and Wildlife
by Lia Brewster, NW Conservation Campaign Strategist, Sierra Club
The Trump Administration has opened a 30-day public comment period on a proposal to rewrite management plans for nearly 2.5 million acres of BLM-administered public lands across western
Oregon. The stated goal is to return timber production to 1980s levels, targeting some of the last remaining low-elevation old-growth forests in the Pacific Northwest, shrinking stream
buffers for salmon-bearing rivers, and putting dozens of Areas of Critical Environmental Concern on the chopping block.
This is not just Oregon's fight. The forests targeted by this proposal share watersheds, salmon runs, and wildlife corridors with Washington...

Help Protect Our Natural, Roadless Areas this Spring
by Mariska Kecskes, Public Lands Organizer, Sierra Club Washington State
The long trail to Suntop on Mt. Rainier. Bluff Mountain trail on Silver Star outside of Vancouver. Barlow pass to Monte Cristo Ghost town in Snohomish County. These areas are just a
few of the over 2 million acres of forests in Washington that are protected thanks to the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule which prevents roadbuilding, commercial logging, and mining
in already roadless forest service lands.
But of course, like all good environmental policies vetted by a robust public process, with broad support, and positive impact for people and the planet - the Trump administration is
now trying to tear it to pieces...

The Trump administration has quietly made it harder for the public to see what’s happening on our national forests, and the Chapter's National Forest Committee (NFC) is seeking volunteer
help. The NFC is looking for volunteers to help monitor and track Forest Service actions that could harm Washington’s national forests, and associated waters and wildlife. We train
volunteers on how to identify new project notices on national forest websites and share updates with the NFC.
This work is vital to the NFC’s efforts to preserve and protect wild places within Washington State, restore forest ecosystems, and halt harmful development in roadless areas. These
reviews generally take two hours per month and can be done at home. NFC members then meet monthly to share information and determine how to engage on forest issues via comment letters,
public meetings/hearings, and/or action alerts.
