Dear Commissioner Brotherton, I would like to share my experiences of the Port Townsend Rec Center and why it's of key importance to the community. First off from my professional experience, the Rec Center serves as a CleanAir and Cooling Center for our county. It's a location that is comfortable and familiar to families and youth. Though it doesn't have AC, the basement stays cool on hot days creating a refuge for youth after school. The staff also run portable air cleaners during days with poor air quality from wildfire smoke. This is an incredibly important resource and a location where active kids and youth can get out of the heat and smoke. From my personal perspective, the Rec Center is the location for countless winter birthday parties for kids and the only large and affordable space to hold birthdays. It hosts the OPEPO program parent meetings, affordable community improv and countless other wonderful programs that support our youth. In a community that has so much directed at elders, we absolutely need the Rec Center to support our youth. I hope that Jefferson County can find alternative funding to keep the Port Townsend Rec Center open. Thank you, Lara Gaasland-Tatro M.S., M.Ed.
