I can’t overstate the value of a healthy parks and rec program. I was first involved with Jefferson County Rec as a 6yo basketball player in 1983 and am still involved as a coach and participant having played just this morning in the oldest consecutively running rec program “morning ball” a 6am basketball game started by Warren Steurer some 40 plus years ago. Youth sports programs have a well documented importance in the healthy development of kids and young adults. In a day and age where social isolation and time behind a screen are at near pandemic levels, creating opportunities for kids to be in social settings, moving their bodies and developing team based values is incredibly important. The idea that these programs could be cut with so little planning or time to develop a plan B is irresponsible at best. I really don’t like the storyline of Jefferson County only cares for old people, but these types of developments make it hard to believe anything else. It’s time to stand up for the youth in this community and find a way to keep these programs alive at least long enough for a better steward to be identified.
