I wish that the city had been willing to meet with you back in January to try a cooperative approach to management of the recreation center similar to the approach under the Interlocal agreement between 2010 and 20155, and I want to encourage to continue to make the requests for joint meetings and a public convening to walk through possible solutions. These convenings should include stakeholders who use the facility currently such as the Jefferson County Soccer Club, the daycare onsite, the Farmers Market, the recreational program users as well as the public broadly, including our youth from ages 3 to high school. My son has used the recreation center facility for eight years. This facility was important to us as a young family, because he is an only child and we moved here not knowing people, but he made friends quickly climbing the rock wall. I would like both the city and the county to consider that a recreation facility in a rural area with the amount of rainfall we have is an essential facility for public health. The rec center has seen increased use over the last couple of years, and those who use it see a need for improvement and possibly expansion so that our high schoolers can make more use of it. It might not always be what the community needs but it has become an essential facility for public health purposes for our youth and their ability to have a safe and supportive network of adults and peers. It should not be eliminated without due process and also a solution for replacement at the ready. I respectfully request that you and the city council convene a public meeting supported by childcare for parents to participate fully to discuss a more expanded list of options for the rec facility. I would also request that you apply any funds collected by the Jefferson Community Fund to operational costs of the recreation center through the end of 2026 on a month-by-month basis until more creative solutions and fundraising can be discussed and accomplished.
