Dear county Commissioners, I have lived in port Townsend for over 20 Years. In that time, my family has enjoyed the rec center in a variety of capacities. When my children were younger, they played rec soccer. They spent some days in childcare there. As they aged, they played games or hung out with friends in the common areas. They spent time at birthday parties and in other community gatherings. Through the years, they spent many hours going down slides and swinging, running around chasing each other, having snacks at the picnic tables. More time passes and they are taking drivers Ed classes in the top floor meeting rooms. Still later, my eldest daughter worked at the rec center as counselor in training. For myself, I’ve enjoyed the gathering of all ages for Zumba several days a week which has not only provided me with physical activity but a true connection and joy with others in our community. In the last couple years, I’ve also accompanied my adult daughter, a teacher in the community now, to watch and cheer on her students playing basketball. The rec center has truly been one of the hearts of our community, a bastion of activity, companionship and connection. Each space you take away from our community is a strike against families and those who bring life to our city and county. Build it and they will come but take it away they will leave. Save the rec center. You must save the rec center. Deb Neville
