Rushed Income Tax Bill Threatens Massive Holes in County, City Budgets
Washington’s state legislature completed its short session last week, but I have a prediction about the state income tax bill it sent to the governor’s desk. What was done in the 60-day
session will create complications for years.
That’s not to say I think the mere existence of a state income tax will summon the apocalypse, as some opponents seem to warn. There’s nothing inherently bad about adding a new method
of taxing to the mix.

Sunday marks 12 years since the deadly landslide in Oso that devastated a community and signaled a shift in environmental management across the state and country.

Pierce County Council Approves Moratorium on Confinement Centers
The Pierce County Council approved an ordinance to impose a temporary moratorium on new involuntary confinement centers in unincorporated Pierce County. Pierce County Executive Ryan
Mello submitted Ordinance for Council consideration, citing the need for Pierce County to refine existing codes after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a pre-solicitation
notice for a new involuntary confinement center in the region.

Funding Opportunity: Federal Broadband Grant
The Washington Public Works Board is administering federal broadband grant funding under the Coronavirus Capital Project Broadband Construction Program from the U.S. Treasury. Applications
will open March 31, and close on June 1. The application link will be made available on the PWB webpage.
PWB has about $5.1 million available in this funding round, with a maximum of $2 million for an individual project. Tribes interested in expanding broadband infrastructure in their communities
will be prioritized, then local governments. Projects in distressed communities or areas identified as Indian country may receive up to $5 million.
