Dear John,
People movements are organizing moments. Three days ago, the Sierra Club helped organize the largest single day of protest in American history as more than eight million people in thousands
of cities and towns across all 50 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico turned out and said enough. No Kings 3 was a defining moment in US history – the largest day of action yet
in our movement to stand against the broad erosion of civil liberties and unchecked executive power in our nation. We are proud to be a part of it.
That each No Kings mobilization has been bigger than the one before it tells us that resistance is not burning out. It’s growing. People are not going numb. We are getting even more
organized. But massive mobilizations need to turn into ongoing action to bring real change. And Sierra Club is leading that action as we head into Earth Month. We’re hosting more than
600 events <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=eyJkZWtJZCI6IjNiZmQwYzUwLWIwYWMtNDM4OC1hOWJkLTMxYjIwOWYxOGI1OCIsImRla1ZlcnNpb24iOjEsIml2Ijoia2JZamFaSGswVHRwVlRXRnE4WjgwZz09IiwiY2lwaGVyVGV4dCI6In

moment for our people and our planet.
We must and will continue to organize to protect endangered species, public lands, the air we breathe, the water we drink, and our children’s future. The Trump Administration is doubling
down in its attacks on the Endangered Species Act. The Environmental Protection Agency has abandoned its responsibility to protect American’s health, prioritizing, instead, the interests
of corporate polluters. Utility bills are soaring across the country, as the Trump Administration works to kill offshore wind and other clean energy projects and illegally prop up the
coal industry.
We have launched significant new lawsuits. Our policy experts, advocates, and communications teams are helping make sure all of us – including politicians nationally and locally – understand
what is at stake, what their obligations and opportunities are, and what we the people demand.
Despite this administration’s quest to keep us dependent on fossil fuels and delay our clean energy future, we saw big reminders this month that we still continue to push towards that
future every day. We know what – and who – we’re up against, but the war in Iran is exposing the volatility of global oil and gas prices, and making the case in stark terms for more
stable and reliable clean energy. While Donald Trump is paying a company a billion of our tax dollars to drop an offshore wind project and walk away from its lease, multiple east coast
offshore wind farms went online this month and started delivering power to the grid – following crucial legal victories Sierra Club helped achieve.
We are proud to be working arm-in-arm with amazing allies and supporters across the country. Our 64 chapters and hundreds of groups are working in every state, supporting long-term activists,
as well as newcomers who see what’s happening now and are moved to action. Sierra Club’s thousands of volunteers and over 3.5 million members and supporters are a force to be reckoned
with, as we have proven time and time again; we show up, we roll up our sleeves, and we make real change happen. We are a powerful movement organization in a historic movement moment.
This Director’s Notes includes just a small sampling of examples of how the Sierra Club is building and exerting our power to meet this moment, hold this reckless administration accountable,
and fulfill our mission.
With gratitude,

SPOTLIGHT: Defending the Endangered Species Act
We are waging an aggressive campaign that entails legal advocacy, shaping the narrative in the media, and organizing pressure on lawmakers to stop attacks on the Endangered Species Act
(ESA) on several fronts.
The Department of Interior (DOI) announced this month it would reconvene the Endangered Species Committee <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=eyJkZWtJZCI6IjM0MmE2N2QwLTg1N2UtNGY4NS04ZTU1LTQ0NDc2
NmUyNTdhNyIsImRla1ZlcnNpb24iOjEsIml2IjoieFNxMVk3c3VBVmZnb292V1o3d1RKZz09IiwiY2lwaGVyVGV4dCI6IjJWTE5PWWhNYy9pRCtjWnE2ak44Z0g4ZHJwYjAydllBZWFyZlowUGlxREdQbk8xamJKV1J0ZXNtQldYSWhUV0Z4bWF3VHhKL2FJNVVCWEd
mR1llcmNyREI4dnh0TWdIRktyVmp1eTRCVitDaWk5Wm52Qk1tIiwiYXV0aFRhZyI6ImpsUUZjWjhaaDZ0eXNNSHkvRzB5QVE9PSJ9> – a federal panel created in 1978 that has rarely met over the past decade – in
an effort to sidestep Endangered Species Act protections for marine wildlife and clear the way for more oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. The committee has the power to override
protections and essentially decide whether certain species get to exist or are allowed to be driven to extinction, earning it the nickname the “God Squad.” And the fates of species
like the Rice’s whale are on the line. There are only an estimated 51 of the critically endangered Rice’s whale on Earth and they exist nowhere else on Earth outside the Gulf.
At the same time, we are lobbying and organizing like the existence of entire species depends on it – because they do – to stop the ESA Amendments Act in Congress. That bill would severely
undermine and limit the effectiveness of the ESA, putting countless species at risk.
Today, our wildlife conservation team and partners are leading a rally outside DOI headquarters to protest the convening of the Endangered Species Committee.
And it comes on the heels of a great legal victory! Just yesterday, a federal court sided with Sierra Club and our partners and struck down an attack against the Endangered Species Act
by the first Trump administration <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=eyJkZWtJZCI6IjRkMDI3ZGU5LTVmNTctNDNhMC04MGVkLTc2YTZmMzUxODA4NiIsImRla1ZlcnNpb24iOjEsIml2IjoiMjF4R1YyNlZtenE1Yi9XcWRWWnUrZz0

1zYmVuZzcrMXFYc0YzOTFJaUE9PSJ9> , vacating a series of regulations that had weakened the law and derailing some of the current Trump administration’s efforts to further weaken the law.
The Endangered Species Act is one of the most important conservation laws in history. The bipartisan bill passed Congress with almost unanimous support in 1973 and, since then, has prevented
the extinction of nearly 300 species and helped save 99% of species listed for protection from extinction. That includes the humpback whale, grizzly bear, and bald eagle and many other
cherished fauna and flora. Sierra Club has fought for decades to defend this landmark conservation law and will continue to stand up to those who would risk sacrificing entire species
to hasten the accumulation of profit by oil and gas companies.
Other Highlights
This is what shaping the conversation looks like!
Earlier this month, the New York Times highlighted the Sierra Club’s expertise and leadership in four articles in four days. And we were quoted in today’s paper, <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/

when it comes to the environment, it is Donald Trump vs. the Sierra Club. This is one example of the consistent press coverage we get as a result of both the strength of our impact
and the communications work and media relationships we cultivate. It makes us an even more formidable force when we are able to tell the story of our work in the press.
We provided the basis for the Times’s reporting with our legal team’s uncovering the Trump administration’s chaotic and contradictory approach to censoring signage (about climate change,
Indigenous people, slavery, and more) on public lands <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=eyJkZWtJZCI6ImEyMTdiZWIyLTZmMzQtNGFjYy1iNzc4LWI4MTk2ZDA2NTY0OSIsImRla1ZlcnNpb24iOjEsIml2IjoiL2d1dThmTGh

system." The variety of important fronts where our work and leaders are featured, at both the state and federal levels, reflects the depth and breadth of our role in the green movement.
From the states: Organizing to save the Roadless Rule in Montana
The USDA is currently developing a draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) on its consideration of repealing the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule, a move that would allow road
construction, timber harvesting, and resource extraction on tens of millions of acres of pristine national forest lands, including the Tongass. The impact of repealing the rule would
be devastating, but the US Forest Service has not been holding meetings for the public to provide input. That’s a significant departure from the way major rule changes should be and
usually are handled. When the rule was created in 1999-2000, the USFS hosted more than 600+ public meetings.
Sierra Club and partners are not letting communities be silenced. We are hosting DIY town hall meetings across the country. Collectively across events, we drew more than 950 people in
meetings held in Kalispell, Libby, Missoula <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=eyJkZWtJZCI6IjkyNzQ1M2E0LTU2OWItNDYwMC05MGQ1LWY4NGZkNGUwZjIzNyIsImRla1ZlcnNpb24iOjEsIml2IjoiVTNicGdIcjdYSHl0TkE2M

is the kind of organizing effort that builds sturdy grassroots infrastructure and grows a national movement.
