Greetings, As a lifelong educator and community member, I would like to add my voice to the many urging our County Commissioners and Parks and Recreation Advisory Board to continue use of the lower level of the PT Community Center at 620 Tyler Street for the use of children and their caregivers, families, and instructors. I have been attending meetings and community events, often weekly, in the upper level of the Community Center since it was built. When I was raising my own child in Port Townsend, I knew how important it is to have a safe place for young people to gather and enjoy activities. Until the Community Center was built, Port Townsend didn’t have this. When I attend gatherings weekly now in the upstairs space, I have ample opportunity to witness and hear the many kids of all ages, from newborns to toddlers to teens, who use this facility. I cannot imagine taking this space away from that dedicated use. As someone who was born in Port Townsend and raised in Jefferson County, a long-time voter and community member, I can’t think of any other location that provides such joy, continuity, and community. For me and others, the Port Townsend Community Center in its present form amplifies the best parts of democracy. With warm regards, I urge you to preserve this space as is. Kirie Pedersen, M.A.
