Dear Commissioners:
As a resident of North Beach, I’d like to make sure you’re fully aware of the adverse impacts of eliminating toilets and trash service at our neighborhood’s county park.
My wife and I live near this park and walk through it nearly every day. It is heavily used year-round by people accessing the beach and Fort Worden. Cars often overflow the parking lot,
and we often note many cars bearing out-of-state license plates. The park is an important asset not only for local residents but also for visitors who contribute to the local economy.
Removing trash service would quickly cause an ugly accumulation of litter of various kinds. Many visitors to the park are walking dogs and need a place to leave their—excuse my French,
as my mother used to say—poop. The park grounds would become unsightly and even unhealthy without trash service.
Likewise, the sani-can toilets are well-used, not only by park visitors but also by tradespeople and delivery-truck drivers as they make their rounds. There are no other public toilets
anywhere in the neighborhood. The nearest public facilities are in the Commons building at Fort Worden, a 20-minute walk at minimum. Bear in mind that many families spend several hours
at the beach and in the park on sunny days and when tides are low. Without toilets, the inconvenience would be considerable; I shudder to think about the risks to public health that
may be deposited and left behind if people must answer an urgent need however they can.
I am sharing this email with other residents to make sure they are aware of possible service cutbacks. Please consider the concerns I’ve raised here as you deliberate on the hard choices
ahead.
Thank you for your service to the county.
