Dear Chair Brotherton and Commissioners:
I'm writing about recent outreach to the county from staff with the Department of Natural Resources concerning our application for a Dabob Bay Natural Area land acquisition grant, #26-1404A
from the Recreation and Conservation Office. While we hope to connect with you via email, phone or in person before our grant deadline on April 30, I’m also forwarding this additional
(optional) invitation to comment in writing on the grant.
Below, you’ll find the project description and a map of our priority parcels in this Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP) proposal. WWRP grants are administered by the Recreation
and Conservation Office (RCO) and the grant process includes opportunities for local jurisdictions to comment on proposals in writing. If you choose to comment on this project, contact
RCO at PO Box 40917, Olympia, WA 98504-0917. Letters received by RCO will be shared with the governor and the Legislature when the WWRP project list is submitted for funding, per RCW
79A.15.110.
In addition, if you’d like to follow-up directly from our earlier contact, please feel free to contact DNR Natural Areas Manager Renee Mitchell at renee.mitchell@dnr.wa.gov. If you have

RCO Grant Application #26-1404A -- Dabob Bay NRCA Natural Areas 2026
The Department of Natural Resources will use this grant to acquire approximately 607 acres of forested uplands adjacent Dabob Bay Natural Area managed lands, located in Jefferson County
within the Hood Canal region of Puget Sound. This acquisition will support and buffer important ecological features that include a globally imperiled forest type identified in the Washington
Natural Heritage Program database and will permanently protect wetlands and streams that flow into Dabob Bay. These streams support spawning and rearing habitat for cutthroat and steelhead
trout, coho, and brook lamprey. Public access to the area will consist of low-impact recreation consistent with protecting the ecological features. The primary conservation opportunity
provided by this project is protection of saltmarsh, shoreline, and adjacent forested upland, which will ensure protection of estuarine and riparian processes and water quality, as
well as provide opportunities for appropriate low-impact public use.
