HomeMy WebLinkAbout041026 - Press Release from JCPH_ ALGAE WARNINGS AT MULTIPLE LAKESPort Townsend, WA – Jefferson County Public Health staff have found heavy algae blooms at three Jefferson County Lakes: Gibbs Lake, Anderson Lake and Lake Leland. The blooms are dominated
by species of cyanobacteria that often produce toxins. On Monday, April 6, a water sample from Gibbs Lake was analyzed for four toxins at King County Environmental Labs, and no toxins
were detected. Warnings signs that had been posted at Gibbs Lake last week have been replaced by “Toxic Algae Info” signs cautioning visitors about the potential for toxins to occur.
Similar blooms at Lake Leland and Anderson Lake that were observed on April 6 will be tested for toxins the week of April 13. Warning signs are posted at those two lakes out of an abundance
of caution until more is known about the blooms.
