Dear Jefferson County Board of County Commissioners:
The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is applying for a grant through the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP) to acquire property located in Dabob
Bay within Jefferson County and is requesting comments from the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners on our proposed acquisition. If awarded, this grant will allow for acquisition
of about 607 acres within the Dabob Bay Natural Resources Conservation Area (NRCA) that is currently managed as State Forestlands by DNR. Although this grant is only for a portion of
the DNR trust lands within the current NRCA boundary, the acquisition would add a substantial amount of land. This area of State Forestlands was added to the Dabob Bay NRCA in 2024
expansion and is adjacent to properties that have previously been conserved. This proposed acquisition is intended to provide protection and buffer for important ecological features
that include a globally imperiled forest type and spawning and rearing habitat for cutthroat and steelhead trout, coho, and brook lamprey that feed into Dabob Bay.
Maps of the proposed area to be acquired are enclosed. Please let me know if you have any questions or need more information about this acquisition proposal. I can be reached at 564-669-0896
or robin.hammill@dnr.wa.gov.
Sincerely,
Robin Hammill (she/her)
