2026 Legislative Session Recap
by Ben Avery, Chapter Director, Sierra Club Washington State
Our grassroots network of more than 81,000 members and supporters is always busy during the legislative session. They meet with legislators before the session begins, send thousands
of emails, make hundreds of phone calls, and show up in person to testify at hearings. This year’s 60-day “short session” was no different—and their impact was clear. Despite significant
challenges, our members and advocates—partnered at times with an dynamic coalition of environmental, social justice and tribal partners—claimed several key victories...

It's Spring. Salmon are Migrating. Speak Up for Salmon Funding.
by Bill Arthur, Chair, Snake/Columbia River Salmon Campaign, Sierra Club
Despite the Trump Administration termination of the Columbia Salmon Agreement, we continue to advance key measures that help our beleaguered salmon and steelhead. Right now, we need
Congress to appropriate funds for fiscal year 2027 (FY27) to continue critical investments in habitat restoration, water quality, and infrastructure. The Six Sovereigns (four Lower
Columbia River Treaty Tribes, Washington, and Oregon) have developed budget recommendations and we need our congressional delegation to again stand strong and fight for appropriations
consistent with these recommendations...

The Future of Light Rail is Under Threat
by Wes Stewart, Clean Transportation for All Organizer, Sierra Club Washington State
Washington has made historic progress expanding light rail in recent years—but now that progress is at risk. While we've celebrated the 1 Line's extension north to Lynnwood, south to
Federal Way, and achieved history with the first floating light-rail line east to Bellevue and Redmond, Sound Transit is sending troubling signs and the future of light rail is under
threat. Right now, following announced cost overruns of around $35 billion, the Sound Transit board has signaled their intention to seek cuts to future light rail construction. After
paying hundreds, even thousands of dollars a year in taxes and fees to build this rail network, Sound Transit must explore ways to bring costs down and find new funding in order to
deliver the rail expansion that voters approved more than a decade ago...

As mentioned earlier in Bill Arthur's blog post, we need you to take action and urge your U.S. Representatives and Senators to back the 2027 budget proposal for our salmon, steelhead,
and other native fish that are vital to the environment, cultural identity, and economy of the Pacific Northwest.
🌲 Help Protect Our Wildest Forests from Trump <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=ABB7InYiOjEsImQiOjQ4NDd9AAcAAAAAABdbEuXjfdnsQX-sUGXRBsQguKJbo0De3JQ8ugV072Ig0mNqoQ8DZb4bYyINWf25SB0nLthPas5cZGo

Our undeveloped national forests are the heart of our public land, but, if the "Roadless Rule" is repealed, 45 million acres of pristine national forests across the country would be
opened up to road building and the logging, mining, and extractive industries that come with that. Our goal is to continue to demonstrate how popular this policy is, and to raise more
awareness about it, by submitting even more comments to the administration than last year. Submit your comment today!
🏢 Sign the Petition: Strengthen Statewide Building Codes <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=ABB7InYiOjEsImQiOjQ4NDd9AAcAAAAAABdbEuXkH0rpGAZh5KId0HYTMiwjV2fl2Ll0ec8MVQQAYr0Xr77zAwO0TXdAJ6z8Re95

The State Building Code Council (SBCC) is considering a set of cutting edge codes that will help to continue the transition of Washington homes and buildings off of fracked gas. The
SBCC needs to hear your voice in support of support climate friendly energy code updates. One of the updates would ensure that as old, conventional air conditioners wear out, they are
replaced with modern heat pumps to increase efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and save money. Take action now!

As mentioned earlier in Wes Stewart's blog post, the future of light rail is under threat and cuts to proposed lines and extensions are being seriously considered. After paying hundreds,
even thousands of dollars a year in taxes and fees to build this rail network, Sound Transit must explore ways to bring costs down and find new funding in order to deliver the rail
expansion that voters approved more than a decade ago.
