BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
AGENDA REQUEST
TO: Board of County Commissioners
Josh Peters, County Administrator
FROM: Jeremy Williammee, Community Development Director
Brian Tracer, Deputy Fire Marshal
DATE: April 20, 2026
SUBJECT: Fireworks Regulation Workshop
STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
The Board of County Commissioners has requested that the Department of Community Development and
the Fire Marshal facilitate an additional workshop to discuss potential changes to county fireworks
regulations.
ANALYSIS:
On March 16, the Board held a workshop to discuss potential changes to the County's fireworks
regulations, including consideration of a fireworks ban and potential pathways for permitting public
displays. This workshop continues that discussion and provides an opportunity to review current
regulatory authority and options available under state law. It will also provide an opportunity for additional
input from the public, Fire Districts, and law enforcement.
Current Jefferson County Code restricts the use of fireworks and sky lanterns based on atmospheric
conditions and a declared high fire danger level. Any local regulations that are more restrictive than state
law require a one-year waiting period before they may take effect.
FISCAL IMPACT/COST-BENEFIT ANALYSIS:
No fiscal action is requested at this time. Board direction around public display permitting pathways may
have impacts on staffing, workload, and budget.
RECOMMENDATION:
Participate in discussion and provide policy direction on desired ordinance changes.
