Just a few years after its designation as a national park in 1890, Yosemite faced alarming proposals to open over half the park to mining.
Sierra Club drafted a petition and collected just enough signatures to persuade Congress to shut down the bill and protect the park.
In the 1960s, the Grand Canyon -- one of America's most visited parks, with thousands of families hiking among the colorful rock layers and stunning views -- was in peril. The federal
government was threatening to build two dams for industry interests that would have destroyed the canyon's ecosystem. Politicians even called it a "cash register."
It was only after Sierra Club members mounted an intense public pressure campaign, flooding the media with ads and garnering thousands of public comments to Congress, that the dam projects
were defeated.
From Yosemite to the Grand Canyon to the Alaskan wilderness, our national parks exist today because people like you refused to back down.
