Port Townsend' Washington' 98368 ".I~O. www.jeffel'8oncountypublichealth.org March 22, 2011 JEFFERSON COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA REQUEST FROM: Board of County Commissioners Philip Morley, County Administrator Tami Pokorny, Environmental Health Specialist II TO: DATE: SUBJECT: Agenda Item - Nomination of Richard Jahnke to the Conservation Futures Citizen Oversight Committee STATEMENT OF ISSUE: Conservation Futures CItizen Oversight Committee Chair Phil Andrus and Water Quality DMslon staff member Taml Pokorny would like to recommend Dr. Richard Jahnke for appointment to a four-year term on the Committee to fill the existing "open Interest" vacancy. The Conservation Futures Program Is an open space program to protect Important habitat areas and working lands in Jefferson County. ANALYSIS/STRATEGIC GOALS/PRO'S and CON'S: This "open interest" vacancy on the CF Committee was advertised In the The Leaderon February 16, 2011 and In the Forks Forum. On March 22, 2011, Phil Andrus and Taml Pokorny Interviewed Dr. Jahnke in person and reviewed his application materials. We feel Dr. Jahnke Is very well qualified to volunteer In this capacity and would make an excellent addition to the CF Committee. Dr. Jahnke received a PhD In Chemical Oceanography from the University of Washington and Is currently Emeritus Professor of Oceanography In the University System of Georgia. He relocated to Port Townsend in 2009. Since then, Dr. Jahnke has provided public lectures through several community groups and is an advisor to the Port Townsend Marine Science Center. He has extensive experience serving on and chairing professional advisory committees during his career Including review panels for the National ScIence foundation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Other than Dr. Jahnke, no one else is pursuing this CF vacancy at this time. FISCAL IMPACT (COST BEN Em ANALYSIS: There is no fiscal Impact to the county's General Fund for appointing Dr. Jahnke to serve on the CF Committee. RECOMMENDATION: JCPH management recommends the appointment of Richard Jahnke to serve a four-year term on the Conservation Futures CItizen Oversight Committee.
