That’s a 35 percent increase over the previous biennium! The Youth Athletic Facilities program received the most applications, with sixty-three, while the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program’s Local Parks Category wasn’t far behind with sixty-two applications. Many applicants now are going through technical review, which helps them refine their projects and applications before final application submission. This enables evaluation committees to get a better understanding of the proposed projects, ask questions of the applicants, and give feedback. After that, grants managers add comments to the applications, complete other necessary checks, and return the applications to the applicants so they can make changes based on feedback received during the technical review. Once edits are complete, applicants resubmit their applications before July deadlines. Advisory committees evaluate and rank the projects in August, and staff will ask the Recreation and Conservation Funding Board to approve final ranked lists later this year. <https://mcusercontent.com/f12461e10aed86ddd51107b5e/images/cf24e172-2f46-1ac1-fc6e-5a478cf6dbd3.png> Grant Program Helps Communities Take Steps Toward Building Outdoor Recreation Areas Physical activity improves mental health, reduces stress, and enhances our sense of place, which helps all of us feel more connected with people, places, and nature. But not every community has access to outdoor spaces. That’s where RCO’s Planning for Recreation Access grant program can help! The program provides planning grants to communities with limited outdoor access so they can work with their residents to identify recreation needs and create plans that improve access and support future recreation investments. Grants can be used to develop long-range plans, pre-design plans for a park or athletic facility, or comprehensive site plans. Additionally, the program helps prepare the applicant to apply for funds in the future to build what they plan. If your community needs a park, athletic facility, or another type of outdoor recreation area, this program may help with the planning process. RCO is accepting applications through July 15. But it’s Not The Only Arrival . . . As we head outdoors to refresh flower beds, launch boats, and explore trails, it’s worth remembering that the more people move, the more opportunities invasive species have to hitchhike into new places. Seeds cling to boots and tires. Insects hide in plant nursery stock. Aquatic plants and animals stick to boats and gear. Even packets of birdseed or “wildflower mixes” can contain invasive species. All it takes is the introduction of a single invasive species to damage an entire plant and animal community. They can overrun gardens, choke waterways, damage forests and farms, and outcompete the native plants and wildlife that make Washington unique. The good news? Spring is also the perfect season to help prevent their spread. Here are some garden-focused actions that can make a major difference: * Choose native plants for landscaping whenever possible. * Avoid purchasing invasive plants, even if they still are sold online, such as English ivy, common holly, or baby’s breath. * Check plant labels carefully, including scientific names, to ensure you are buying the native strain of the species and not a non-native strain. * Review the Washington State Noxious Weed Control Board <https://us.list-manage.com/199X5XYdLUG?e=186c5ff3d1&c2id=833b5ac863a855eb321285724e591d29> lists for known invasive species. * Inspect trees and shrubs for unusual insects or signs of damage. Most importantly, report invasive species when you find them. Early detection gives experts the best chance to contain or eradicate new infestations before they spread further. Spring is when many of us reconnect with the outdoors. Staying aware of invasive species pathways and making thoughtful choices in our gardens and recreation, can help protect Washington’s forests, waterways, farms, parks, and wildlife for seasons to come. <https://mcusercontent.com/f12461e10aed86ddd51107b5e/images/336da7a7-7838-cc4f-ecda-5cbddc01d65b.png> Improving Grant Programs At its April meeting, the Recreation and Conservation Funding Board approved several changes to the Boating Facilities Program and the Nonhighway and Off-road Vehicle Activities program. For the Boating Facilities Program, the board approved changes to grant limits, limits for multisite projects, exclusive use, and moorage limits, which could help improve project implementation and increase the number of funding requests for priority projects. For the Nonhighway and Off-road Vehicle Activities program, the board adopted a long-term grant award policy, increased grant limits in the Off-road Vehicle Category, and updated the evaluation criteria. The board hopes these changes will ensure a better distribution of projects statewide and reduce the administrative effort in applying for and managing grants. *Photo courtesy of the Yamaha Corporation <https://mcusercontent.com/f12461e10aed86ddd51107b5e/images/946a566d-dbc0-cee9-19ff-6fad43ff2455.png> Cumulative Threats, Collaborative Solutions: Shaping Salmon and Watershed Futures In June, the Governor’s Salmon Recovery Office, along with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Pacific Salmon Foundation, will host a free virtual workshop <https://us.list-manage.com/BFetS4u9q01?e=1 86c5ff3d1&c2id=833b5ac863a855eb321285724e591d29> about the challenges of addressing cumulative threats to salmon while also creating collaborative recovery solutions in a rapidly changing environment. The workshop will highlight work by Simon Fraser University’s Watershed Futures Initiative, a collaborative that undertakes and coordinates research on cumulative effects in British Columbia’s salmon-bearing watersheds, and initiates dialogue among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. Additionally, there will be presentations and panel discussions on case studies where collaborative approaches are supporting the path toward healthier watersheds and salmon runs.
