Dear Jefferson County Commissioners:
I am writing to you in support of everything that Al Bergstein wrote to you about the proposed land transfer of Protection Island to the Jamestown S'Klallam tribe. As you know, I have
been in the environmental world for the past 25 years. I highly value all our public lands nationwide, statewide, and countywide. I also have the highest respect for the tribe, and
all tribes, for the tremendous job they have done in many areas.
Protection Island is one of the rare and crucial places where seabirds can breed without any human interference. The island's ecological significance stems from several key factors:
* Seabird Breeding Haven: It supports the third-largest rhinoceros auklet colony in North America and is one of the last two breeding sites for tufted puffins in the Salish Sea.
* Marine Mammal Sanctuary: The island is a major hauling-out area for harbor seals and was the first location in Washington where northern elephant seals were observed giving birth.
* Crucial Nesting Grounds: It acts as a nesting site for bald eagles and features the largest glaucous-winged gull colony in Washington state.
This is not just any island. It is a very special and crucial place that all of us need to protect from any commercial enterprise encroachment, whether it is tourism or aquaculture.
With the current onslaught by the Trump administration attempting to dismantle all environmental protections of so many of our sacred places, it is up to you, our local government,
and our state officials, to protect the environmental jewels we have been so proud of and so many people have worked so hard for to achieve protection status.
Please consider your responsibilities as local officials and offer the wildlife that cannot speak for itself the same protections you offer your constituents.
Thank you,
