052726 - WWRC May E-News
ALERT: BE CAUTIOUS This email originated outside the organization. Do not open attachments or click on links if you are not expecting them. Coalition E-News: May 2026 Summer is in sight, and to celebrate, we’re taking the WWRC show on the road! First stop: Spokane, where we’ll gather tomorrow with legislators, partners, and supporters for a Coalition Happy Hour before heading out to meet with lawmakers across Eastern Washington. These trips are a critical part of building support for the next phase of WA Wildlife and Recreation Program advocacy. And it’s not too late to join us - swing by 3100 E Olympic Ave, Spokane, WA 99271 (behind Hillyard Bicycle) tomorrow, May 28, from 5–7 p.m. for drinks, appetizers, and conversation with fellow outdoor enthusiasts. Speaking of advocacy, the Coalition has officially kicked off the first stage of our WWRP funding level development process. Earlier this month, our State Policy Committee reviewed the initial round of indicators and data shaping our 2027 funding ask, with another meeting scheduled later this month to discuss and vote on a recommended number. Big conversations ahead, including at our June 24 Board meeting when we'll finalize our funding ask. As always, thank you for your support. It helps keep us at the table during critical funding conversations and powers the outreach, relationship-building, and on-the-ground advocacy needed to champion projects across the state. Lots happening - and a long, exciting road ahead. Onward! This month’s featured project highlights how WWRP State Lands Development & Renovation grants are improving recreation opportunities on one of Puget Sound’s most remarkable islands. Pelican Beach Renovation and Development Tucked along the shores of Cypress Island, Pelican Beach Campground has long been a favorite stop for boaters, campers, and paddlers exploring Puget Sound. Protected from strong onshore winds and framed by sweeping views of the Cascades and eastern San Juans, it’s the kind of place that reminds visitors what makes Washington’s outdoors so special. Now, thanks to a $321,700 WWRP State Lands Development & Renovation grant awarded to the Washington Department of Natural Resources, Pelican Beach is getting important upgrades to improve both visitor experience and long-term sustainability. The project will renovate existing campsites, trails, boardwalks, staircases, fencing, kiosks, and picnic facilities while adding six new campsites and a new restroom.
