The pieces for purchase, each $15, were created and donated by White Salmon Valley School District (WSVSD) 7-12 graders. After attendees selected a bowl — designs ranged from glazed cherries and geometric patterns to mini-humanoids with clay feet and eyes — soup was provided by Everybody’s Brewing, Henni’s Kitchen and Bar and the White Salmon Bakery, which also supplied fresh bread. “It’s really nice because someone else can enjoy the piece I worked hard on; the money that’s being raised is going to a good cause,” said Carley DuBree, a freshman at Columbia High School. For the fundraiser, she crafted a colorful watermelon bowl with raised seeds in the center. “Empty Bowls, now in its second year, is organized and run by WSVSD art teachers Ashley Nalevanko, Kelsey Lemon and Stephenie Going. Hosted in partnership with Marvin Thomas Memorial, National Council of 100 Black Women Seattle Chapter, CompuKidz Worldwide, National Council of Negro Women, and Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center, the event connected residents with health resources while emphasizing a broader view of wellness rooted in community, stability, and opportunity. At Byrd Barr Place, health has long been viewed as extending beyond medical care alone. She was first exposed to addiction early in life. “My mom was an addict as well, so I grew up in that lifestyle,” Amanda shared. By her early twenties, she was using drugs and quickly found herself caught in a cycle that led to years in and out of prison. After serving 24 months, Amanda was released in November 2024 with almost nothing. No stable housing, no essentials, and no clear path forward. “Every time I’d get out of prison, I’d have things in mind, but I didn’t know how to get there,” she said. This time, something was different. President Trump's proposed 2027 budget eliminates the Community Development Block Grant, a program that provides over $3 billion to cities across the country. Spokane has received over $7.5 million from the program in the past two years. “This is not the first time the grant has faced elimination. President Trump proposed cutting the grant from the 2026 budget, but the House of Representatives decided to keep the funding for that year. The administration says the reason for the cut is because the money is being used for pet projects and not community needs. Homes are expected to be priced in the low $300,000 range, with estimated monthly payments between $2,300 and $2,800, offering a more attainable path for families who want to live and work in the community. To qualify, applicants must earn less than $113,760 in annual household income, secure financing through the initiative’s lending partner, The Money Store, and provide a $1,000 refundable deposit, which may be applied toward a down payment if they proceed with the purchase. In addition, employees are also connected to critical support services to remove barriers to long-term employment and economic mobility. And 75% of all of the jobs created with CED funds are filled by individuals with low income. Long understood as a largely urban issue, many of the tools and strategies to address homelessness were developed in urban communities, like permanent supportive housing (PSH). Service providers and housing developers face significant structural barriers to create and maintain PSH in rural areas. This webinar will feature research by the Housing Initiative at Penn on this topic. State efforts to restrict what SNAP recipients can buy with their benefits are expanding across the country – despite evidence that they are harmful, burdensome, and ineffective. States are already strained by H.R.1, facing higher costs, new error-rate penalties, and heavy administrative demands. Adding food restrictions is fiscally irresponsible, requiring costly retailer updates and more staff time, while research shows SNAP participants eat no differently than other Americans. Policing food choices is ineffective, undermines American values, and worsens food insecurity. The worst health outcome is hunger. The real solution is strengthening SNAP with adequate benefits, access to healthy foods, and proven produce incentives.
