Dear Jefferson County Commissioners,
Please do NOT allow Protection Island to be transferred into the sole hands of the S'Kallam tribe. I personally knew Eleanor Stopps before she passed. She and Lorna Smith worked for
years and through several presidents to get these areas protected and managed in a way that benefits everyone, especially wildlife.
The tribe has already shown a willingness to industrialize lands with an oyster operation that would degrade protected shorelines. Protection Island stands as a beacon to the grass roots,
bipartisan movement of conservationists who came together to protect it forever. The plan is working. There is no need to change the current arrangements.
