Dove House Advocacy Services has been in Port Townsend since 1982. The purpose was to be a place of meeting, support, information, resource referrals and direct services for all women
and their families in Jefferson County. The Center was committed to helping women discover their own personal resources and ways to go about developing them within our society. It has
grown to include Advocacy work, a Domestic Violence Shelter, Dove House Recovery Café, Dove House Closet, and both transitional and permanent housing. Dove House could not grow and
support our clients without the partnerships in the community. We appreciate you!

Raising Awareness Together
In honor of April Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the dedicated staff at Dove House proudly wore denim on April 29, 2026, to stand in solidarity with survivors.

In 1992, a young woman in Rome was going for her first driving lesson when she was sexually assaulted by her driving instructor. He took her to a remote area, attacked her, and she bravely
reported the crime. The instructor was arrested, found guilty, and sent to prison for the horrific act.
However, in February 1999, he appealed the decision, claiming that their encounter was consensual. Surprisingly, the Italian High Court agreed, suggesting that because she wore tight
jeans, she must have helped remove them, making it no longer sexual assault, overturning his conviction and releasing him. This decision sparked anger among many, especially women in
the Italian Parliament, who protested by wearing jeans. Their protests were a powerful statement against the injustice and spread beyond Italy, leading to movements like Denim Day in
Los Angeles in 1999.

Over 1,250 people visited our booth they loved the spin-the-wheel game and grabbing goodies. Our staff's handmade bracelets were a big hit!

Meet Linda!
Linda has always cared deeply about helping those in need. Influenced by the women’s liberation movement, women’s rights have always been near and dear to her heart. When her kids were
young and in elementary school, she began her journey of service by volunteering at women’s shelters in Florida and Texas. After relocating to Port Townsend, Linda discovered Dove House
and became a volunteer. Linda commits her time at both Dove House, restocking the pantry to ensure everyone has access to everyday essentials, and at Recovery Café yoga classes, bringing
a sense of peace and healing to those who attend.
Pride is especially important to Linda because she has gay daughter. After her daughter attended her first Pride event, she told Linda about a group of women gathered at the end of the
parade route wearing “Free Mom Hugs” shirts and offering hugs to anyone in need. While Linda’s daughter felt accepted, many of her friends did not, some no longer acknowledged by their
families. Linda began wearing a “Free Mom Hugs” shirt at Pride and you will see her at the annual Port Townsend Pride celebration gladly offering hugs.
