Call to Order: Chairman Taylor called the meeting to order called the meeting to order at 1:00 p.m.
in the presence of Member Mark McCauley, Chief Examiner Sarah Melancon, and Secretary Kristen
Bennett.
Public Comment: No comments received.
Approval of Minutes: Member McCauley Motioned to approve the meeting Minutes from April 28,
2026, as presented. Chairman Taylor seconded the Motion. The Motion carried.
New Business: None
Old Business:
1. Certification of Sheriff Deputy Eligibility List and Potential Action: Chief Examiner Melancon
presented the Patrol Deputy Eligibility List to the Commission. Member McCauley Motioned to
approve. Chairman Taylor seconded the Motion. The Motion carried.
2. Continuation of discussion for lowering the minimum age for Corrections Deputies from 21 to
18 and Potential Action: Discussion continued regarding the viability of hiring Deputies and
Corrections Officers under the age of 21. It was decided that the minimum age requirement for
incoming Corrections Deputies would be lowered to 18 years of age. This change is approved
effective today’s date, subject to a 30-day review period during which the Prosecuting Attorney’s
Office may submit any objections. If no objections are received within that period, the revised
minimum age requirement will remain in effect for a 24-month trial period beginning May 20,
2026. At the conclusion of the 24-month period, if no significant issues or concerns have arisen,
the minimum hiring age of 18 for Corrections Deputies will continue permanently. Chairman
Taylor Motioned to approve. Member McCauley seconded the Motion. The Motion carried.
Closing Remarks: Chief Examiner Melancon announced the departure of Secretary Bennett from the
Commission.

meeting scheduled May 26, 2026.
