On the anniversary of our Independence Day, many people are talking about patriotism, but it means different things to different people. To me, patriotism means fighting to make this
country that I love better for everyone. For every community. For wildlife. For generations yet to come. It means protecting the people we love, the places we call home, and the natural
spaces that make this country so special.
From neighborhood parks and local rivers to national forests, wildlife refuges, and national parks. These are the mountains, forests, deserts, rivers and streams, prairies, coastlines,
and environments where we go to hike, connect with nature, play with our kids, and watch wildlife.
America's public lands also provide sources of drinking water for tens of millions of Americans. They are home to threatened species. They drive local economies and they contain irreplaceable
cultural and spiritual values to Indigenous people.
At a moment when so much feels divided, public lands remain our common ground. They connect us to nature, to history, and to each other. But, these lands are under threat like never
before.
Our shared lands and waters represent the fundamental idea that the natural beauty of this country and its wildest places are worth protecting -- and that they belong to all of us, not
just the elite or privileged few.
Public lands unite us all -- here are three ways you can help celebrate our shared legacy:

Activists like you and I agree that corporations should not be able to pave over our meadows, just as they should not control the halls of power. Oil and gas drills should not replace
picturesque landscapes and wildlife, just as corporate polluters' bottom line should not determine American policies.
Our wildlife refuges and wilderness areas have not persisted merely out of goodwill. The American people fought -- and will continue to fight -- to protect these public lands. The Sierra
Club led the movement to start the national parks system in the 1890s, and we've defended our national treasures from attacks for decades.
Together, we can make sure public lands stay public, protected, and accessible to all for the next 250 years.
