Peters, County Administrator DATE: July 13, 2026 SUBJECT: WORKSHOP re: Deputy Director of Intergovernmental and External Affairs, U.S. Department of the Interior STATEMENT OF ISSUE: On May 22, 2026, the County Commissioners received an email message from Mr. Nathan Naidu, Deputy Director of Intergovernmental and External Affairs for the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI). Mr. Naidu said that he is reaching out from the Department of the Interior to offer a virtual meeting to go over any issues that Jefferson County may be having and to touch base going into President Trump’s second year. This workshop is that virtual meeting. ANALYSIS: DOI states on its website [www.doi.gov] that the agency’s mission is as follows: The U.S. Department of the Interior protects and manages the Nation’s natural resources and cultural heritage; provides scientific and other information about those resources; and honors its trust responsibilities or special commitments to American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and affiliated Island Communities. More information about DOI, including its strategic plan and annual performance plans, is available on its website. Mr. Naidu expressed in his email message that, “…the important thing is to get (and keep) the lines of communication open.” FISCAL IMPACT: N/A RECOMMENDATION: Review issues with this representative from DOI.
