In June 2025, the Washington Supreme Court set new limits for Jan. 1, 2026: full‑time attorneys handle no more than 47 felony case credits, 120 misdemeanor credits, or 250 civil commitment credits per year. By December, Spokane County Commissioners changed the county code to set higher caseload maximums than the state bar association guidance because of budget constraints. The lawsuit filed in Pend Oreille County on May 1 asks a judge to decide who is right. Local officials warn the reduction will hit core community health programs counties rely on to keep residents safe and supported. The county received about $2.5 million from July 2025 to July 2026. Next year, its $1.9 million allocation is $626,000 less. Changes in the funding formula of Foundational Public Health Services means counties statewide will see cuts — $24 million from the 2025-2027 budget. About 185 firefighters worked to contain the fire just east of the Columbia River. Counties are seeing more fires sparked by people, with higher response costs and greater community risk. North Star, the unique collaboration behind the Projects of Impact Award for housing solutions earlier this year, will now play a role in funding decisions. The Board of Commissioners dissolved its Behavioral Health Treatment Sales Tax Allocation Advisory Committee and now relies on recommendations from the county public health director. The North Star leadership team reviews the recommendations, and commissioners make final decisions as part of the annual budget process. County leaders say the new setup brings city and county partners into one process and keeps funding decisions clear, coordinated, and tied to the county budget.
