Dear Editor -
I moved to Washington state in 1985 as a young field biologist, and was privileged to work as a professional for two tribal governments within the Puget Sound area during my nearly 40
year career. I often recognized my privilege to be living and working in an area where tribal governments were active and engaged as co-managers. So, I was elated to see your article
about the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe seeking support through federal legislation to transfer Protection Island and Dungeness Spit National wildlife refuges into tribal trust. I encourage
community members who live, work and recreate along the Strait of Juan de Fuca to strongly support this proposal. Here are just a few reasons. The Jamestown S’Klallam tribal government
is more established, stable and dedicated to environmental protection than our federal government. This move would give these areas guaranteed protection by a government with a multigenerational
track record, thousands of years stewarding these lands and waters.
Second, we want and need the leadership and professional contributions from tribal governments to protect and restore these areas – this is a big and complex job – they have much to
offer. Third, the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe has benefited the land and water in our area through successful partnerships. Examples can be seen at the Dungeness River Nature Center,
Tamanowas Rock preserve and the Chetzemoka trail in Port Townsend.
Thank you Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, for taking leadership in caring for these precious places.
