Public Safety — DEA moves to temporarily schedule synthetic kratom substances
On July 1, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) filed two Notices of Intent to temporarily place highly concentrated and synthetic kratom-related substances into Schedule I of the
Controlled Substances Act. The action targets synthetic and high-concentration 7-hydroxymitragynine products — not natural kratom leaf — and would give county law enforcement and public
health agencies additional tools to address manufacturers, distributors and illegal trafficking of these emerging substances. NACo supports federal, state and local efforts to regulate
