Re: Unmuffled Compression Brakes
Dear Jefferson County Commissioners,
My wife and I have resided at the above address about a mile or
so from the west end of the foot of Discovery Bay in Jefferson County
for the last 25 years. This is not far from where Highway 20 intersects
with Highway 101 at the end of the bay.
For many years we have had little problem or complaint with
traffic noise coming from Highway 20 above us or Highway 101 across
the Bay. However, over the last few years the interstate motor carrier
use and noise has increased to the point of, we believe, noise pollution.
The problem is when these huge trucks use their unmuffled
compression brakes when coming west down Highway 20 from
Eaglemount Road to Highway 101, and west down Highway 101 into
the unincorporated town of Discovery Bay. These stretches are both
downhill slopes and the noise travels far and wide.
In any event, the noise levels have become unreasonably loud and
frequent as of late, seriously disturbing the resident's quiet enjoyment.
I am writing to request that you please look into this and apply
remedies, such as signs prohibiting use of compression brakes in the
reasonable and necessary portions of Highway 20 and Highway 101 as
they approach the end of Discovery Bay. We realize this issue was
discussed in 2019, but no remedy was obtained. We and our neighbors
around the Bay believe the time for resolution has arrived.

RCW 46.37 and Jefferson County Code 10.05.050 which authorize this
reasonable action. Thank you.
