WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recently announced a new clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist used to treat diabetes,
as treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD).
Currently, more than 400,000 Veterans nationwide are diagnosed with AUD, and some estimates say AUD affects nearly 11% of U.S. adults.
Semaglutide has drawn scientific interest because it may affect parts of the brain related to how the body experiences rewards. An analysis published in March found that patients receiving
GLP‑1 medications experience lower rates of AUD and other substance use disorders compared with similar patients taking other diabetes medications.
The use of GLP-1 medications by people with existing substance use disorders has been associated with fewer emergency visits, hospitalizations and other adverse outcomes. These findings
highlight the need for a controlled clinical trial to determine whether a GLP-1, such as semaglutide, can reduce AUD among Veterans.

“This clinical trial reflects medical research that VA is uniquely situated to launch, and is aimed directly at benefitting Veterans,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins. “By exploring emerging
treatment options like the use of a GLP-1 for AUD, we aim to expand the tools available to help Veterans take control of their health and recovery.”
The study, known as the Cessation or Reduction of Alcohol Consumption in Veterans trial, will enroll more than 600 Veterans at 18 VA medical centers nationwide. Participants between
the ages of 18 and 80 with moderate or severe AUD will receive weekly injections of either semaglutide or a placebo over a 24‑week period, followed by a safety follow‑up. Researchers
will track changes in drinking, health, and quality of life to determine whether the medication offers a meaningful new treatment option.
The study will be conducted at the following VA medical centers:

VA strongly discourages self‑medicating or attempting to replace other AUD treatment options with GLP‑1 medications or any other unprescribed substances. Evidence‑based, proven treatments
are available at VA facilities to support Veterans with AUD. Veterans should always consult their health care providers before making any treatment decisions.

Veterans Day
Each year, VA and the Veterans Day National Committee (VDNC) work together to select a poster to help tell the story of service, sacrifice and gratitude on Veterans Day. The poster serves
as the visual centerpiece for the Nation’s Veterans Day observance and reflects the pride and patriotism Americans share in honoring those who wore the uniform.
The poster will be displayed in VA facilities, military installations and municipal buildings across America. It will also serve as the cover of the official program for the Veterans
Day commemoration at Arlington National Cemetery on Nov. 11, 2026. It’s also available for download <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fdepartment.va.gov%2Fveterans-day%2Fposter%2F%3Fut

The poster that will represent Veterans Day this year brings together the enduring symbols of our Nation’s history with the continued legacy of military service, and recognizes America’s
250th anniversary. This year’s design combines the modern American flag with an early American flag, visually connecting the founding of the United States with the generations of Veterans
who have defended its freedoms.

11” x 17” poster
We have created an 11” x 17” poster that is compatible with most office printers. Please make sure to load 11” x 17” paper into the target printer. We recommend selecting the “Fit to
page” option under the Page Setup menu. This will slightly reduce the poster size to fit the printer without cropping the image.

The American Legion, American Veterans of World War II and Korea (AMVETS), Disabled American Veterans, Marine Corps League, United Spanish War Veterans, and the Veterans of Foreign

VA's NW MIRECC serves to improve the mental health and well-being of Veterans through research and dissemination of information to providers both within VA and the general public. VHA
continually evolves and cultivates ongoing cutting-edge medical research and innovation <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.mirecc.va.gov%2Fvisn20%2FAbout_NWMIRECC%2Fnwmirecc-histor

of America’s patriots. NW MIRECC brings together complementary research, education, and clinical programs from VA Puget Sound (VAPSHCS) and the VA Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS).
The collaborative approach to mental health research, education and treatment has had a profound impact on the lives of Veterans.

. The mission of NW MIRECC is to improve the quality of life and function of Veterans by developing, evaluating, and promoting the implementation of effective treatments for Posttraumatic
Stress Disorder (PTSD) and its complex comorbidities. PTSD comorbidities include the behavioral consequences of repetitive blast mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI), Substance Use Disorder
(SUD), chronic pain (in particular, post-concussive headaches), cognitive impairment, and increased risk for neurodegenerative disorders (chronic traumatic encephalopathy [CTE] and
Alzheimer’s disease [AD]). VA MIRECC's provide for the improvement of the provision of health-care services and related counseling services to eligible veterans suffering from mental

• the conduct of research (including research on improving mental health service facilities of the Department and on improving the delivery of mental health services by the Department);
• the education and training of health care personnel of the Department; and
• the development of improved models and systems for the furnishing of mental health services by the Department.
As part of the VISN 20 NW MIRECC mission to enhance access to mental health expertise, the NW MIRECC collaborates and consults with other MIRECCs and Centers of Excellence, as well as
with other VA, Department of Defense (DoD), Federal, State departments of Veterans Affairs, community agencies, and experts. The close geographic proximity (40 miles) of DoD Joint Base
Lewis-McChord/Madigan Army Medical Center to VAPSHCS has provided an exciting opportunity to develop innovative and productive research, education, and clinical care collaborations
with DoD personnel that address PTSD and its associated conditions in their early stages in active-duty Servicemembers.
VA ranks as one of the nation's leaders in health research. Every year, thousands of research studies are conducted at VA medical centers, outpatient clinics, and nursing homes. For
example, the VA has:
<https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/fancy_images/USVHAVISN20/2026/03/13342196/6995781/presidenttruman_crop.jpg>
• Developed artificial limbs that allow amputees to have more independence and better quality of life
• Invented the cardiac pacemaker
• Performed the first successful liver transplantation
• Developed the nicotine patch to help people stop smoking
• Played a major role in the development of the CT/CAT scan to view the inside of the body
• Tested new drugs and treatments for diseases such as AIDS, Diabetes, Alzheimer's and Osteoporosis
NW MIRECC research studies significantly contribute to advancements in our understanding of medical problems that lead to health improvements for Veterans and civilians alike. Research
studies at NW MIRECC are currently enrolling Military Veterans, First Responders, Health Care workers, and Civilians in Seattle, Washington <https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fgcc02.saf
