Fostering a Culture of Recovery
4
-Relationship-centric and strengths-based.We are not here to ‘fix’
anyone or advocate for one recovery pathway over another. Our
Members are the expert on their experience, we’re here for support
-Peer leadership and mutual support.Provide opportunities for Members
to learn, grow, and contribute in community
-Destigmatizing, non-pathologizing:“We’re all in recovery from
something." Inherent value of the individual.
-Harm reduction:Welcome back after relapse. "Loving accountability"
combines clear expectations/consequences with compassion/support.
-Increase recovery capital:Personal, interpersonal, and community
resources that can be drawn upon to begin and sustain recovery.

Member Testimony
15
"[Recovery Café] gives me a reason to
be sober and people who I feel
accountable to. If I slip-up it gives me
motivation to be sober to return to the
cafe."
"The cafe gives me a reason to be sober, a
place I can go back to if I mess up, and
support to be less likely to relapse. Without
having the community it would be a much
greater struggle."
"While my life outside of Recovery Cafe is
chaotic and unstable, the cafe and the
community at Recovery Cafe have provided
crucial support that have greatly improved my
ability to cope with the other aspects of my life.
I really appreciate how I feel safe and can see
the effort they make to maintain an inclusive
environment and continue to improve based on
the community's needs. It is the first time in a
long time I have felt like I have a place where I
am understood and welcomed."
